When You Need Teeth Whitening
If you’re nervous about smiling in social or business situations because you’re worried that your teeth will make a bad impression, it’s time to talk with your dentist about a teeth whitening program.
Before you get started, however, you should know that there are two separates types of tooth discoloration — intrinsic and extrinsic yellowing.
Knowing the difference can help you decide which teeth whitening option is right for you.
Extrinsic yellowing
Staining or yellowing can happen for several reasons, but two of the most common ones are smoking and regularly eating or drinking things like coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries and other dark fruits.
A good cleaning and regular use of at-home whitening products can usually remove these kinds of stains. However, if the stains have been there for a long time or are deeply stuck into your teeth, in-office treatment might be a better option for you.
Intrinsic yellowing
Intrinsic yellowing on the other hand, is caused by issues on the inside of the teeth and does not respond well to whitening toothpastes. Your dentist can successfully treat this condition with a series of in-office visits using bleaching products designed to lighten the inner tissues of your teeth. Here’s what you need to know about intrinsic discoloration:
- Your teeth should be in relatively good condition for this procedure to have maximum effect. If you’ve got cavities or other dental issues, your dentist will fix these problems before proceeding with the teeth whitening process.
- You may experience some sensitivity as a result of the process. This generally doesn’t last more than 24 hours and can be alleviated using over-the-counter pain relievers.
- The results will last anywhere from six months to two years, so you should be prepared for having whitening treatments as a semi-regular part of your dental care.
Who Should Get Teeth Whitening?
The teeth whitening services we offer are safe when performed in the office and according to our instructions. Our products, including ZOOM whitening, can help you to see significant improvement in the way your teeth look. However, some people may not be able to have tooth whitening without further dental care as a first step. This may include those with tooth decay, white spots on the teeth, gum infections, sensitivity, discoloration (for other reasons), crowns and bridges.
Find the Teeth Whitening You Need
In-office Whitening
This process takes only a few minutes but can whiten your teeth by several shades with each visit, eliminating deep stains that regular brushing can't remove. When you come in for your consultation, we’ll talk to you about how well this treatment can work for you and what you can expect.
The process we use involves the application of a chemical (a safe, hydrogen peroxide-based or hydrogen carbamide-based solution) that creates a reaction on the teeth. This reaction works as a bleaching to remove stains from the inner tubules of the enamel (where the stains accumulate).
Activated by a special laser light, this whitening system brings you significantly better results in less time compared to typical over-the-counter whitening products.
Complimentary Take-home Whitening
After you come in to our downtown Edmonton office for a cleaning, we can provide you with a free home teeth whitening product and custom formed whitening trays. (Just keep in mind that you'll need to have good all-around oral health before you can start whitening your teeth.)
These no-cost whitening kits are a great way to see the whitening effects of professional-strength options and experience their benefits yourself!
