Symptoms of Gum Problems

Gum diseases are gum-related problems that happen due to poor oral hygiene. The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, which when ignored can turn into periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis can cause extreme inflammation and pain in the gum structure and also lead to deterioration of the jaw bone structure. To avoid the pain and discomfort caused by gum diseases, keep an eye on the following symptoms before the problems escalate.

Initial Symptoms

As we already discussed, gum problems or diseases happen in stages, so the symptoms can also be noticed in different stages. At the initial stage of gum problems, the following symptoms are noticed:

  1. Mild swelling and redness of gums.
  2. Bleeding gums during flossing or brushing of teeth.

These are the symptoms noticed when a person suffers from the initial stages of gingivitis.

Progressive Symptoms

Sometimes people consider mild inflammation of gums as a side effect of harsh brushing and ignore it. This untreated gingivitis can culminate into a much serious gum disease known as periodontitis. People suffering from periodontitis suffer from the following symptoms:

  1. Persistent bad breath emitted from infected gums, also known as halitosis.
  2. Change of taste in the mouth.
  3. Loosened teeth making it difficult to bite.
  4. Pus formation within the gum surface leading to gum abscess.

Acute Gum Disease Symptoms

Prolonged ignorance in treating gum diseases can aggravate it and lead to Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG) or Trench Mouth. This is the most severe stage of gum disease. The symptoms of ANUG include:

  1. Highly painful and bleeding gums.
  2. Sudden fever.
  3. Taste of iron in the mouth.
  4. Bad breath.
  5. Ulcer formations.
  6. Excessive salivation.
  7. Difficulty in swallowing food.
