Common Dental Problems in Adults

There are various dental issues some adults may be faced with, and becoming aware of them is the first step in ensuring proper oral hygiene. Below are five common dental issues that adults generally face:

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

With this condition, the mouth remains dry all the time. Dry mouth can occur when salivary glands are unable to produce enough saliva. It can also happen due to certain health conditions or can be caused by certain medication. Symptoms of dry mouth may include, but are not limited to; dry feeling in the mouth or throat, gum irritation, bad breath, and difficulty while chewing and swallowing food.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is orally damaging and can lead to permanent loss of teeth. Lack of oral hygiene, excessive consumption of sugary and acidic foods, fluoride deficiency, tobacco consumption and dry mouth can lead to tooth decay. Tooth decay can become severe and result in cavities or even tooth loss.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a condition when one feels pain or irritation while consuming hot or cold foods and beverages. Tooth sensitivity can occur due to depleting tooth enamel, tooth decay, cavities, worn dental fillings, or tooth fracture. Applying too much pressure while brushing and teeth grinding can also lead to tooth sensitivity.

Periodontal (Gum) Diseases

Periodontal diseases are inflammation of the connective gum tissues. The major cause of periodontal diseases is an excessive plaque or tartaric buildup. The 3 stages of gum disease based on the severity are: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. The first stage can be easily reversed with proper care and medication. However, treating the latter stages is difficult and can only be done with the help of professional dental procedures.

Fractured Teeth

Fractured teeth refer to broken, chipped, or cracked teeth. These oral issues can occur due to a major accident, clenching, or grinding. People who have fractured teeth, often face difficulty in biting, chewing, and even talking properly.
